Ways to Afford the Cost of Adoption

One of the major reasons people do not pursue adoption is because of the high cost of adoption, especially international adoption.  There are several things people can do to help balance adoption costs and make it something financially possible.

Some ways to help you afford adoption:

  • Adoption grants and adoption loans
  • Non-recurring adoption expenses: Adoptive parents of special-needs children can apply for non-recurring adoption expenses to be covered by special subsidies to help with the cost of adoption.
  • Military adoption benefits: Military families may be able to afford adoption costs with reimbursement from their military branch.
  • Purchase of service: Purchase of service is an agreement between the child's and adoptive family's adoption agencies.  Ask your adoption agency for more information regarding this service.
  • Employer sponsored adoption benefits: More and more companies are offering adoption benefits to their adoptive parent employees.  Check with your employer to see if this is an option.
  • Adoption tax credit
  • Fundraising efforts
  • Foster-Care adoption: For more information see my blog entry on "Foster Care Adoption"

Remember, where there is a will, there's a way.  Never let finances or the stress of adoption costs stop you from adopting.
